Dude’s got lots of reasons to smile these days. Guessing by the Grammy noms, in mainstream eyes he’s arrived. But those in the know now he’s been a standout rapper/singer for years now.

He’s patented this brand of throwback soul/R&B that soccer moms dig and doesn’t come across like mainstream pandering. Love how he’s been able to carve out a place for himself and on his own terms.

Simple Bumpy. New R&B on that smoothed out tip. Is it just me or does this vibe like a reworking of an long lost UB40 joint?

Charlie Wilson doesn’t get the props that he should for holding it down for so long and influencing today’s R&B.

His latest, Uncle Charlie, will probably stay under the radar but does have a couple of cool joints such as this one (written, incidentally, by Babyface and Calvin Richardson).

Props go to Snoop as well for continuing to show Charlie some love.

Tank: Maybe I deserve (video)

Posted in general on June 17th, 2009 by urbanguy

This was on the radio today. Was never a huge fan of Tank (really? Tank?) but this song and vid was okay for a top ten 10 R&B single in 2001.

He was going for this sensitive thug vibe I guess. By 2001, Tank simply arrived at the tail end of the 90s urban R&B era…too late. Not sure I’d call his career a smash success but he did have his moments in the sun…however fleeting.
